I used to think self-care meant doing all the right things.
You know, therapy sessions, journaling every night, meditation apps, bubble baths, fancy face masks — the whole “wellness influencer” checklist.
And yeah, some of it helped... a little.
But deep down? I still felt overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted.
Like I was trying so hard to “fix” myself but nothing ever really changed.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the thing:
Self-care isn’t about what you do.
It’s about how you treat yourself.
For the longest time, I was performing self-care.
I was ticking off boxes to look like I was healing.
But inside? I was still the harshest critic of myself.
I was meditating while mentally beating myself up.
Writing affirmations I didn’t believe.
Trying to “rest” but feeling guilty the whole time.
And then, one day, something shifted.
I stopped asking,
“What self-care should I do today?”
and started asking,
“How would someone who truly loves themselves treat themselves right now?”
That question changed everything.
Because real self-care isn’t a checklist.
It’s a radical act of kindness you give yourself — no strings attached.
It looks like:
Saying no without a million apologies.
Resting when you need to, without guilt.
Speaking kindly to yourself like you would to your best friend.
Letting go of “perfect” and embracing enough.
And here’s the kicker:
You don’t have to earn care.
You don’t have to fix yourself first.
You deserve kindness, rest, and love right now — just as you are.
So if you’re feeling stuck in your self-care routine,
maybe the missing piece isn’t a new habit or app.
Maybe it’s simply deciding to be someone who loves and respects themselves —
messy parts, imperfect moments, and all.
That’s the shift that changed everything for me.
And I promise — it can change everything for you too.
