You ever scroll through Instagram or Twitter and think, “Wow, everyone else’s writing is so much better than mine”? Like, you see these polished stories, killer tweets, or beautiful poems and suddenly your own words feel like garbage. Yeah, me too. Every single time.
Here’s the thing: feeling like everyone’s better at writing is normal—and honestly, it kind of sucks. But it doesn’t have to stop you. In fact, it might just be the best thing that ever happens to your writing.
1. Stop Comparing (I Know, Easier Said Than Done)
Comparison is a sneaky trap. We look at someone’s finished novel or viral thread and forget how many drafts, tears, and late nights it took to get there. I remind myself: They were beginners once, just like me. So instead of beating myself up, I try to focus on my own little wins. Finished a paragraph? Cool. Figured out a new way to describe a sunset? Awesome. Those small victories add up.
2. Write for You — Not for Likes or Followers
It’s tempting to write with the internet watching, hoping for applause or shares. But when I’m drowning in “everyone’s better than me” vibes, I switch gears and write just for myself. No judgment, no pressure, no expectations. It’s messy, weird, and imperfect — and that’s exactly what makes it real. Writing like this? It’s freeing.
3. Embrace the Ugly First Draft
Spoiler alert: every writer’s first draft is a hot mess. Even the ones you admire. So when I’m stuck on a paragraph that sounds dumb, I remind myself that’s the point. Get the ugly out first. Fixing and polishing can come later. Sometimes you just have to make a big, messy, beautiful mess before it turns into something amazing.
4. Learn Without Envy
Instead of letting jealousy eat me alive, I try to learn from writers who inspire me. What’s their secret sauce? How do they tell stories that hit so hard? I read like a detective, picking up little tricks and experimenting with them in my own writing. That way, I turn envy into fuel.
5. Your Voice Is Your Superpower
There’s only one you—and guess what? The world needs your voice, exactly as it is. You don’t have to sound like anyone else. Your stories, your thoughts, your weird metaphors—they’re your unique gift. When I remember that, writing stops feeling like a competition and starts feeling like an adventure.
So yeah, some days it feels like everyone else has it figured out and you’re the only one struggling. But here’s the truth: everyone struggles. The difference is who keeps writing anyway.
If you’re reading this and feeling stuck, just know you’re not alone. Keep writing your messy, imperfect, beautiful words. The world is waiting to hear what only you can say.
